TCS NQT Resume Tips 2025 — What TCS Actually Looks For

ByteResumes Team1 March 20254 min read

TCS receives over 3.5 lakh applications through NQT every year. With numbers like that, your resume has approximately 6 seconds to make an impression before being moved to the reject pile.

Here's what TCS actually looks for — and how to give it to them.

Understanding TCS NQT Hiring Process

TCS NQT (National Qualifier Test) has two tracks:

TCS NQT (IT) — for general IT roles

  • Numerical Ability, Verbal Ability, Reasoning Ability
  • Coding Test (2 questions)
  • Package: ₹3.36 LPA

TCS Digital — for premium tech roles

  • Advanced Coding + Subject Knowledge
  • Package: ₹7 LPA+

Your resume matters most at two stages: initial screening and HR interview. Let's optimize for both.

What TCS ATS Scans For

TCS uses iCIMS as their ATS. Based on patterns from thousands of accepted resumes, the system looks for:

Must-Have Keywords for TCS NQT IT

  • Java, Python, or C++ (at least one)
  • SQL / MySQL / Oracle
  • Data Structures
  • OOP concepts
  • Problem solving
  • Communication skills

Must-Have Keywords for TCS Digital

  • React / Angular / Node.js (full-stack)
  • AWS / Azure / GCP
  • Microservices, REST API
  • Agile / Scrum
  • CI/CD, Docker

The Ideal TCS Resume Format

Page Length

One page only. TCS HR has stated multiple times they prefer single-page fresher resumes. Two pages signals you don't know how to prioritize.

Section Order for TCS

  1. Contact Information
  2. Professional Summary
  3. Technical Skills
  4. Projects (2-3)
  5. Education
  6. Certifications
  7. Internship/Training (if any)

The Summary TCS Loves

"Final-year B.Tech ECE graduate from JNTU Hyderabad with strong programming skills in Java and Python. Solved 200+ DSA problems on LeetCode. Completed 3 web development projects. Seeking to contribute as a Systems Engineer at TCS."

What makes this good:

  • Mentions specific college (TCS filters by college tier)
  • References quantified DSA practice
  • Shows 3 projects (not just 1)
  • Mentions the exact role name (Systems Engineer)

CGPA Requirements — The Real Picture

Officially: TCS requires minimum 60% or 6.0 CGPA throughout academics (10th, 12th, degree)

In practice: Having exactly 60% puts you at risk. Aim for:

  • 7.0+ CGPA = comfortable shortlist
  • 6.5-7.0 = borderline, compensate with strong projects and certifications
  • Below 6.5 = very difficult, requires exceptional projects or referral

Important: TCS checks all gaps and backlogs during BGV (Background Verification). Don't hide anything.

Projects That Impress TCS

TCS looks for projects that demonstrate:

Tier 1 Projects (Best)

  • Full-stack web application with database integration
  • Android/iOS app with backend
  • Machine learning project with real dataset
  • Cloud-deployed application

Tier 2 Projects (Good)

  • CRUD application with proper architecture
  • API integration project
  • Data analysis with visualization

How to Describe Each Project

Project Name | Tech Stack
• What problem it solves (1 line)
• Key technical features implemented
• Scale/metrics if possible (users, data volume, etc.)
GitHub: github.com/yourname/project

Certifications That Actually Help

TCS values certifications from recognized bodies:

High Value:

  • TCS iON certification (yes, TCS has its own)
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner
  • Google Associate Cloud Engineer
  • Oracle Java Certification

Medium Value:

  • HackerRank (Gold+ badges)
  • Coursera certifications from top universities
  • NPTEL courses with certificates

Low Value (Skip if space is tight):

  • Random Udemy/YouTube completions
  • Internal college workshop certificates

The TCS HR Interview — Resume Questions You'll Face

Once you clear NQT, HR will grill you on your resume. Be prepared for:

  1. "Tell me about your projects" — Know your project inside out. Be ready to explain the architecture, challenges faced, and tech choices.

  2. "What is your favourite programming language and why?" — Pick one, explain why with technical reasoning.

  3. "Are you willing to relocate?" — TCS posts are anywhere in India. Say yes.

  4. "What are your CGPA and academic gaps?" — Be honest. TCS does thorough BGV.

  5. "Why TCS?" — Research TCS's recent projects, their pace program, digital transformation work.

Red Flags That Get TCS Applications Rejected

  • Academic gaps without explanation — BGV will find them anyway
  • Fake projects — HR will ask you to explain the code live
  • Skills you can't back up — Don't list "Machine Learning" if you can't explain gradient descent
  • Poor communication in email — TCS uses email heavily; your application email matters
  • Generic resume — Same resume sent to 50 companies; TCS HR can tell
